A chef who once cooked for President George W. Bush at the White House now runs the kitchen at the Clearwater Beach Sheraton Resort on Sand Key.

Will Artley, a Culinary Institute of America graduate who competed on Food Network's "Chopped" and holds a Master Pizzaiolo certification from the Italian government, joined the Sand Key resort as executive chef. He oversees menus at four on-site dining spots, including the beachfront Rusty's Bistro, at 1160 Gulf Blvd.

Tampa Bay 28 reporter Sean Daly profiled Artley on Aug. 28, calling the Sheraton "a suddenly hot-reservation Clearwater Beach kitchen."

Artley's path to Sand Key started in Washington, D.C. After President Bush dined at a restaurant where Artley worked, Bush invited him to cook at the White House. "I got a White House invitation. Obviously, it's pretty amazing. I still have it …" Artley told Bay News 9 in June. He also prepared meals for President Barack Obama during several visits to BLT Steak, another D.C. restaurant where he worked.

His credentials run deep. Before moving to Clearwater Beach, Artley held positions at Evening Star Cafe, Pizzeria Orso, BLT Steak and Nonna's Kitchen in the D.C. area. He finished second on "Chopped" in a 2012 episode, competing against a basket of spiral ham, noodle kugel, pizzelles and mustard greens. He has been named to the Best Chefs America registry, a peer-voted designation, and was a finalist for Rising Star Chef of the year.

Artley is also channeling his White House connections into a limited-time menu at Rusty's Bistro. The resort's Presidential Plates dinner series ends Monday, Aug. 31, giving diners one final weekend to try dishes inspired by three former presidents. Created in honor of America's 250th anniversary, the lineup includes a trio of sliders with onion straws, American cheese, hurricane sauce and pickles inspired by Obama, a 32-ounce tomahawk steak marinated overnight for Taft and a peach cobbler with brown-sugar-marinated peaches for Reagan.

According to a resort press release, Artley drew on personal experience to build the menu. He cooked for Obama at BLT Steak and learned about presidential food preferences from White House resident chefs during the Bush administration.

Artley's family is originally from Mexico, and his father and brother served a combined 57 years in the U.S. armed forces. He has worked with first lady Michelle Obama's "Chefs on the Move" initiative and chairs efforts for the American Liver Foundation.

The resort's other dining options include Beach Bites Food Truck poolside from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Mainstay Tavern gastropub and Slo Joe's Turtle Bar. Reservations for Rusty's Bistro can be made at (727) 595-1611, ext. 3204.
