Clearwater Central Catholic extended its winning streak to eight matches Monday, Oct. 12, sweeping Shorecrest Prep in straight sets to advance to the FHSAA Class 2A District 8 girls volleyball semifinals.

The Marauders won 25-14, 25-23, 25-14 at Cavallaro Dome in Clearwater, improving to 15-11 and setting up a Tuesday, Oct. 13, matchup against Tampa Prep.

The victory ended Shorecrest's four-match winning streak and closed the Chargers' season at 21-4, according to MaxPreps.

Marauders continue late-season turnaround

Clearwater Central Catholic entered the postseason riding a seven-match winning streak after recovering from a 7-11 start.

The turnaround included straight-set victories over Largo on Sept. 29, St. Petersburg Catholic on Oct. 1 and Countryside on Oct. 5. The Marauders also defeated Tampa Catholic 3-2 on Oct. 7 before opening district tournament play against Shorecrest.

Monday's quarterfinal marked CCC's second victory over Shorecrest this season. The Marauders previously swept the Chargers 3-0 on Aug. 18.

The teams played a competitive second set Monday, with Shorecrest coming within two points of forcing a tie in the match. CCC held on for a 25-23 victory before closing out the sweep with another 25-14 set.

Shorecrest's Jayla Borg-Giuria recorded nine kills and four service aces, while Hayden Zielinski contributed 23 assists. Jesse Diner added 17 digs, according to MaxPreps' match recap.

Tampa Prep awaits in district semifinal

Clearwater Central Catholic will face Tampa Prep at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the district semifinals.

The Terrapins enter the matchup at 18-6 after sweeping Admiral Farragut 3-0 in their postseason opener.

Tampa Prep also defeated CCC 3-0 on Sept. 9, giving the Marauders an opportunity to avenge an earlier loss as they seek a berth in the district championship.

The MaxPreps matchup preview lists Tampa Prep at No. 5 and Clearwater Central Catholic at No. 12 in Florida's Class 2A rankings.

CCC competed in Class 2A District 7 last season, finishing 14-14 overall. This year, the Marauders entered the District 8 tournament with a 3-1 regular-season district record.

A victory Tuesday would extend CCC's winning streak to nine matches and move the Marauders one step closer to a district championship.
