Romeli Espinosa announced himself to the BayCare Ballpark crowd on Saturday, Aug. 8, with a one-out triple in the eighth inning, his first extra-base hit as a Clearwater Thresher.

The 18-year-old, a shortstop by trade, was playing third base in his first home game since joining the club out of the 2026 draft class. His triple to right-center sparked a two-run rally that nearly erased a three-run deficit. Victor Cardoza singled Espinosa home, and Jack Hopko added a sacrifice fly to pull Clearwater within 4-2.

It wasn't enough.

Tampa Tarpons catcher Luis Puello hit two solo home runs, including one in the ninth inning that sealed the 4-2 final, according to the MiLB.com game recap. Matthew Fisher (2-1, 3.54) took the loss.

The Clearwater Threshers posted a video highlight of Espinosa's triple on Sunday, calling his debut "memorable." FanGraphs' trade deadline prospect guide, published Aug. 3, described the teenager as "still super projectable and playing great defense" while noting his bat hadn't caught up yet in Florida. MiLB.com listed him as the Phillies' No. 22 prospect.

Espinosa wasn't the only 2026 draftee to make an impression during the six-game home series against Tampa. Second-round pick Caden Bogenpohl belted a go-ahead two-run homer in his own BayCare Ballpark debut on Tuesday, Aug. 4, powering a 5-2 Threshers win. On Friday, Aug. 7, Jack Hopko broke up a no-hit bid with his first professional hit, then launched his first professional home run in game two of a doubleheader sweep, 3-2 and 4-3.

The Threshers (63-43, 23-17 second half) split the series 3-3 with Tampa after dropping Sunday's finale 10-5. Macon Winslow provided a bright spot in that loss, crushing his first career professional home run, a three-run shot in the sixth. Matthew Ferrara extended his on-base streak to a career-high 16 consecutive games.

Clearwater takes Monday off before opening a six-game road series against the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels on Tuesday, Aug. 11. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
