A contractor accidentally struck a sewer force main near Clearwater Beach on Tuesday, Aug. 11, triggering road closures and a potential sanitary-sewer overflow near Mandalay Avenue.
The incident happened around 3:15 p.m. while the contractor was working on a planned force main replacement project on North Beach, according to a Clearwater Public Utilities emergency alert. The strike damaged the main feeding Lift Station #10 on Bohenia Circle South.
Bohenia Circle South between Bruce and Mandalay avenues and Verbena Street between Lantana and Bruce avenues are closed.
The city said a potential active sanitary-sewer overflow may exist at the site. Wastewater collection crews and vacuum trucks were dispatched to assess damage and begin repairs. The alert was posted at 4:45 p.m. and updated at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday, but no resolution status was included in the update.
No boil-water order is in effect.
Sweetgum Way closed since Aug. 7
Separately, a broken sewer pipe near 2939 Sweetgum Way has kept a stretch of that road closed since Friday, Aug. 7. The closure runs between Redwood Way and Deer Run East.
Clearwater Public Utilities and an emergency repair contractor installed a temporary bypass line to route wastewater around the damaged pipe while permanent repairs are arranged. Drivers should use Deer Run Road as an alternate route.
The two incidents are unrelated, affecting different parts of the city simultaneously.
No boil-water advisory for either site
Neither incident has triggered a boil-water advisory. No timeline for road reopenings or permanent repairs has been announced for either location.
