Two high-dollar Clearwater real estate deals closed within days of each other in mid-August.

The former home of jazz legend Chick Corea, at 2124 Laurence Drive, sold Friday, Aug. 14, for $2 million. The three-story, 8,134-square-foot residence had been listed in May for $2.5 million, according to St. Pete Catalyst.

Three days later, a portfolio of five buildings with 11 vacation rental units at 628, 640 and 644 Mandalay Ave. on Clearwater Beach sold Monday, Aug. 17, for $4.25 million. That portfolio had been listed in October 2025 at $5.5 million, meaning it traded $1.25 million below ask.

Corea's Clearwater estate sells for $2 million

Corea, a 29-time Grammy Award winner according to the Recording Academy, died of cancer in February 2021 at 79. He played on Miles Davis' landmark albums "In a Silent Way" and "Bitches Brew" and led the fusion band Return to Forever. He purchased the Laurence Drive property in 1997 for $825,000 with his second wife, pianist and songwriter Gayle Moran.

"It is my hope that those who have an inkling to play, write, perform or otherwise, do so," Corea wrote in a statement shared the day of his death in February 2021. "If not for yourself then for the rest of us."

Built in 1985, the home sits on 1.88 acres and includes five bedrooms, eight full bathrooms and one half-bath. The main level features a great room with vaulted cathedral ceilings and a brick fireplace, a library with a high-end sound system, and an office with stained glass windows. The property also has a detached 550-square-foot studio, a three-car garage and a saltwater pool surrounded by a red brick deck.

Terri Novitsky with Lauren Michaels Real Estate Partners served as both the listing and buyer's agent. Published reports did not identify the buyer.

Corea performed at the Clearwater Jazz Holiday festival in 2002 and 2014. This year's festival at Coachman Park, running Oct. 15-18, will feature "Fires of Forever," an ARConnection tribute to Corea featuring Pete Carney, on Friday, Oct. 16.

Beachfront rental portfolio sells for $4.25 million, below asking price

The Clearwater Beach vacation rental portfolio spans three parcels totaling 11 units. The seller, operating as Mandalay Clearwater LLC, bought all three parcels in 2006 for $2.2 million. The $4.25 million sale price is nearly double that purchase price, before undisclosed renovation, operating, financing and transaction costs.

The oldest structure on the property dates to 1926. Each unit has its own outdoor living space, and a center courtyard includes a gazebo, hot tubs, a deck and a grill. The properties sit steps from the beach.

Karen Henry with Viewpoint Realty International was the listing agent. Published reports did not identify the buyer.

The sale comes as Pinellas County tourism continues to surge. The county recorded its strongest lodging-tax collections for May in the past three fiscal years, according to WUSF.

No redevelopment plans or permit filings tied to either property were identified in the records reviewed.
