Two new spots to eat and drink are headed to the Clearwater-Largo corridor, with Boardwalk Pizza hoping to open a second location within a month and a sports bar tied to former Downtown Pizza owners taking shape on Ulmerton Road.

Boardwalk Pizza, known for its pizzas and gyros at 2547 Countryside Blvd. in Clearwater, is expanding to 1751 S. Highland Ave. at the corner of Cambridge Drive. The Tampa Bay Times reported Aug. 22 that the owners said in an Aug. 17 phone call that they hope to open within a month.

The new location will carry the same menu: signature pizzas and gyros, calzones, salads, and hot and cold subs.

The half-acre South Highland site sits on the Clearwater-Largo border and has housed several pizza shops over the past two decades, along with a Peruvian restaurant, a flower shop, and a farm stand. It was originally a gas station. The most recent pizza joint there closed several months ago.

Meanwhile, Playmakers Bar & Grill is set to replace the former Ker’s WingHouse at 7375 Ulmerton Road in Largo. The WingHouse closed a few weeks before the Aug. 22 report, and the marquee already reads: “Closed for renovations Playmakers Bar & Grill coming soon.”

The former owners of Downtown Pizza on Cleveland Street in Clearwater are affiliated with the new venture. A Downtown Pizza employee said in an Aug. 17 phone call that the former owners sold the Cleveland Street pizzeria and plan to open Playmakers, though the exact ownership structure has not been disclosed.

Workers and trucks were on-site in mid-August converting the former WingHouse into what the Tampa Bay Times described as a modern sports bar. Playmakers does not yet have a website or Facebook page, and no opening date has been announced.

The WingHouse location carries its own history. Former Florida Gator and NFL lineman Crawford Ker founded the chain there in 1994. It grew to more than 20 locations statewide before Ker sold the company to private equity firm Third Lake Capital in 2014.

Not everyone on the corridor is celebrating. The owner of the Kwik Stop at 1500 Cambridge Drive, directly across from the new Boardwalk Pizza site, is closing after nearly 30 years because of a rent increase.

“I will miss this place. But I have worked over here for a long time. I am ready to go home,” the owner, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Tampa Bay Times. He plans to return to Pakistan.

Boardwalk Pizza’s owners hope to open the South Highland location within a month of their Aug. 17 phone call. No timeline for Playmakers has been disclosed.
