Pinellas County will receive more than $2.6 million in federal grants for hurricane recovery and a new safe room at a county utilities facility in Largo.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced the funding Tuesday, Sept. 29, as part of a $116 million package covering 88 projects across Florida. The Tampa Bay region received about $48 million, WTSP reported.

More than $1.8 million will reimburse hurricane recovery work

The Pinellas money comes from two separate programs.

The larger grant, more than $1.8 million through FEMA's Public Assistance program, will reimburse the county for site inspections, damage assessments, permitting, code enforcement and emergency protective measures taken after recent hurricanes. That work spans the county, including Clearwater, where inspectors have assessed storm damage to homes and businesses.

Nearly $840,000 will fund Logan safe room design

A second grant of nearly $840,000 will help Pinellas County design a hurricane safe room with backup power at the Logan Utilities Operations Center in Largo. The federal funding is for planning and design rather than construction.

The Operations Center is part of Pinellas County Utilities' Logan campus. County plans call for a multipurpose facility designed to support utility operations, including during emergencies. Plans for the safe room include an operations room, sleeping area, offices, kitchen, mechanical space and other support areas.

The Logan campus also includes Pinellas County Utilities' water quality laboratory, which conducts roughly 50,000 tests per year and holds state certification for more than 85 testing procedures, according to Pinellas County. The laboratory is separate from the Utilities Operations Center receiving the safe-room design funding.

FEMA awards $116 million across Florida

Statewide, the FEMA announcement said the $116 million is part of more than $781 million the agency is distributing across 490 projects nationwide. Manatee County received the Tampa Bay area's largest single allocation, nearly $44 million, for emergency response and debris removal after hurricanes Milton and Debby.

FEMA's Sept. 29 announcement did not specify when the federally funded design work or subsequent construction of the Logan safe room would be completed.
