Clearwater kept its perfect season alive Friday, Sept. 18, beating previously undefeated Largo 24-14 to improve to 5-0 on the year.

The Tornadoes had posted three straight shutouts over Dunedin, Countryside and St. Petersburg before Largo broke through for 14 points. NGSC Sports called the result "the biggest" of the night across Pinellas County. Largo, which entered at 4-0, suffered its first loss and dropped to 4-1.

Head coach Thor Jozwiak's group has leaned on sophomore quarterback Jaysean Glenn and a defense anchored by junior end Marquis Robinson Jr. After the Tornadoes' 26-0 shutout of Countryside on Sept. 4, Jozwiak praised Glenn's rapid growth.

"There were a couple of times when (Jaysean) made some reads that we've been working on in practice or that he's been drawing on the white board … Then he sees it on the field and he knows what to do," Jozwiak told the Tampa Bay Beacons after that Countryside win.

That development has carried into the season's second half. Clearwater entered Week 5 ranked No. 8 in Class 4A by FloridaHSFootball.com's power rankings.

CCC rolls past St. Pete Catholic

Across town, Clearwater Central Catholic (CCC) handled St. Petersburg Catholic 35-11 on the road.

The Marauders came in unbeaten and ranked No. 3 in Class 2A after a 42-7 rout of Calvary Christian the week before. St. Petersburg Catholic returned quarterback Chase Burrill, who threw a county-record 53 touchdown passes last season, but the 35-11 final reflected CCC's dominance.

CCC has made three straight state championship appearances, according to NGSC Sports, and the Marauders look positioned for another deep postseason run.

Countryside stumbles at Boca Ciega

Countryside had a rougher night. The Cougars fell 44-7 at Boca Ciega, dropping to 3-2 after entering the game at 3-1.

The loss was a sharp reversal for a Countryside program that opened the season with three wins before falling to Clearwater 26-0 in Week 3.
