Clearwater police charged a Safety Harbor woman with felony elder neglect after officers found an elderly woman unclothed, unresponsive and malnourished on the floor of a home.
Lisa Beckford, 57, was arrested Tuesday, Sept. 29, and charged with neglect of an elderly or disabled adult, according to the Clearwater Police Department. The arrest stems from a Sept. 20 police response to a Clearwater residence, first reported by WTSP.
According to the arrest affidavit, Beckford held power of attorney for the woman and was identified as her primary caregiver. The woman had dementia and required ongoing care.
Officers responding to the home found the woman on the floor, unclothed and unresponsive. Hospital staff later told investigators she appeared extremely malnourished, smelled of urine and had numerous abrasions and contusions on her body.
Beckford told investigators she visited the woman less than once a week and did not live with her, according to the affidavit. Police said Beckford was responsible for providing care necessary to maintain the woman's physical health.
The woman's name has not been released. Her age and current medical condition have not been made public.
Under Florida law, neglect of an elderly or disabled adult is generally a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison. The offense can be charged as a second-degree felony, punishable by up to 15 years in prison, if the neglect results in great bodily harm, permanent disability or permanent disfigurement.
The specific degree of the charge against Beckford has not been confirmed in available court records.
The Clearwater Police Department has not issued a separate public statement on the arrest.
No arraignment date has been announced.
