The Clearwater Main Library is now hosting free American Mahjong sessions every Thursday in its fourth-floor Heritage Studio, giving residents 16 and older a new reason to pull up a chair downtown.

The program, called Mahjong At Main, launched Thursday, Aug. 6, and runs weekly with no stated end date. The library provides sets for up to six games at once. Players must bring their own game card. No registration is required, but the library's event listing warns that latecomers may lose their spot to those on a waiting list.

The program's stated goal is sharpening critical thinking skills, and research on the game's traditional form supports the idea. A 10-year study of more than 7,000 older adults in China found that regular mahjong players' cognitive scores held steady over the decade while non-players declined. The study was cited by Mindbodygreen in June; the cognitive demands of American and traditional mahjong are considered similar, though no peer-reviewed study has examined the American version specifically.

Kevin Sullivan, an associate professor of geriatrics at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, told the Clarion-Ledger in July that social connectedness "is one of the most important aspects of the game" when discussing mahjong's health benefits broadly. He noted isolation ranks among the largest risk factors for cognitive decline in older adults.

The Thursday sessions join an existing Monday mahjong program already running in the same room, signaling growing demand for the tile game at the downtown branch. Nationally, Yelp reported searches for mahjong clubs surged 4,467% year over year as of June 2026, according to Mindbodygreen.

The Main Library sits at 100 N. Osceola Ave. in downtown Clearwater. Residents with accessibility questions can call (727) 562-4970.
