Threshers shut out by Tampa, close six-game series on three-game skid

The Clearwater Threshers were shut out Sunday, July 12, as Tampa scored three runs with two outs in the eighth inning to win 3-0 at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

The loss capped a rough finish to a six-game series the Threshers once led. Clearwater dropped three straight to close the set, finishing 2-4 against Tampa and falling to 10-11 in the Florida State League's second half (50-37 overall).

Pitching holds strong before late collapse

Right-hander Cade Obermueller struck out six and allowed just two hits across four shutout innings, walking nobody. It marked the fourth time in nine starts this season that Obermueller finished without issuing a walk, according to the team's game recap.

Reliever Brian Walters was equally sharp, retiring all six batters he faced across two hitless innings with three strikeouts.

The bullpen held until the eighth. Tegan Cain (1-1, 3.26 ERA) surrendered two runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings before Marty Gair allowed a third run on two hits in one-third of an inning.

Offense stalls despite fifth-inning opportunity

Clearwater's best chance to score came in the fifth. Nolan Beltran and Angel Mata both reached on errors by Tampa third baseman Jackson Lovich, and Guillermo Rosario dropped a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out. The Threshers failed to push a run across.

Mata recorded his fourth multi-hit game with Clearwater. Rosario has collected three hits over his last two games, and Juan Villavicencio extended his on-base streak to nine consecutive games.

Series slide

The Threshers won games two and three of the series — 5-4 on Wednesday, July 8, behind a Jonathan Hogart eighth-inning homer, and 6-1 on Thursday, July 9, when Brad Pacheco fired six shutout innings. But a rainout Friday, July 10, forced a doubleheader Saturday, July 11, that Tampa swept, 8-6 and 5-3. Hogart hit a three-run shot in game one, becoming the third Thresher to reach 10 home runs in 2026, and Villavicencio went deep in game two.

The series opened with a 7-0 Tampa rout Tuesday, July 7, in which Clearwater managed just one hit.

Tampa improved to 15-6 in the second half.

After the All-Star break, the Threshers open a three-game road series at Dunedin against the Blue Jays on Friday, July 17, with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
