More than 100 animals at SPCA Tampa Bay's shelter need toys, treats and enrichment supplies to get through the summer. The nonprofit is asking Clearwater-area residents to help fill that gap before Friday, July 31.

SPCA's inaugural Christmas in July Donation Drive, which launched Monday, July 6, collects new, unopened items for dogs, cats, rabbits and other small animals in the shelter's care. SPCA Tampa Bay has served Pinellas County for 85 years and cares for more than 8,000 animals annually.

Drop-off sites are open in Clearwater, Largo and St. Petersburg. A full list of participating locations is available at the organization's website.

"We are looking for durable toys for dogs because fluffy toys can get destroyed pretty fast," said Corey Price, executive vice president and chief operating officer at SPCA Tampa Bay. "For cats, we need treats and toys. We would also love more comfort items for our shy friends, like hiding houses or blankets, so they have a safe place to hide and build confidence because it can be overwhelming in a shelter."

Enrichment supports animals' behavioral health

The shelter's most-needed items include dog toys and durable chew toys, cat toys and treats, training treats, puzzle toys and interactive feeders, and rabbit and small animal enrichment items. All donations must be new and unopened.

Price said behavioral health is just as important as medical care for shelter animals, noting that enrichment items become part of each animal's daily routine and help staff build trust with animals waiting for homes.

The shelter is caring for more than 100 animals at its Largo facility, with another 30 in foster homes. Many are kittens, making kitten-specific toys and supplies especially valuable.

Ways to donate before July 31

Residents who prefer to shop online can purchase items through the organization's Amazon or Chewy wish lists, which ship directly to the shelter at 9099 130th Ave. N. in Largo. Monetary donations also are accepted through the organization's website.
