The Phillies' Double-A affiliate clinched its first outright Eastern League championship since 1995 Tuesday. The title run started in Clearwater.

Right-hander Gage Wood, the Phillies' No. 1 prospect and MLB's No. 30 overall prospect, opened the 2026 season with the Clearwater Threshers before a dominant stretch earned him a direct promotion to Double-A Reading in May. The Reading Fightins then rode a prospect-loaded roster to a 13-4 rout of the Erie SeaWolves at FirstEnergy Stadium, finishing the playoffs 4-0 and outscoring opponents 40-12.

Wood's fast climb from Clearwater to Reading

Wood, 22, struck out 40 batters in eight starts and 26 1/3 innings with the Threshers before his May call-up. At Reading he posted a 99-to-18 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 68 2/3 regular-season innings across 17 starts. On Sept. 3, he fanned a career-high 10 batters in four-plus innings against Hartford, with his fastball touching 98 mph in the first inning, MLB.com reported.

"You see him pitch, it's electric ... You see his mound presence, it's very intense ... He's walking with a purpose," Casey Weathers, the Phillies' director of pitching development, said of Wood Sept. 4 on Peacock's "Road to the Show."

Innings cap kept Wood out of the finale

Wood did not pitch in the championship finale. The organization placed him on the developmental list during the series after he reached his 100-inning cap for the season, according to MLB.com. Those 100 innings spanned his Clearwater and Reading regular-season work, four playoff innings against Hartford and one inning in the All-Star Futures Game at Citizens Bank Park in July.

His Futures Game selection marked the fourth straight year a player who began the season on the Threshers' roster earned a spot on the National League squad, according to the Threshers' website.

Deep roster finished what Wood started

The Fightins didn't need Wood's arm to close it out. Carson DeMartini and Caleb Ricketts each hit grand slams in the finale. Bryan Rincon, the Phillies' No. 4 prospect, drove in seven runs across the four playoff games after a regular season in which he slashed .267/.410/.517 with 26 home runs and 30 stolen bases.

Reliever Mavis Graves, a 2024 second-round pick, posted a 0.96 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings across 14 appearances after his late-July promotion to Reading. Aidan Miller, the Phillies' No. 2 prospect, returned from a back procedure to make his 2026 debut with Single-A Clearwater Sept. 5 and landed on Reading's postseason roster.

Reading's second-half surge set up the title run. The club posted a 40-28 record after a subpar first half, finishing with the Eastern League's second-best mark over that stretch.

Wood was Philadelphia's first-round pick, No. 26 overall, in the 2025 draft. A right shoulder impingement during his junior year at the University of Arkansas had limited him to 37 2/3 innings before the draft. He more than doubled that workload this season between Clearwater and Reading.
