Blues Traveler, Gin Blossoms and Spin Doctors play BayCare Sound at Coachman Park on Tuesday, Sept. 1, marking the first BayCare Sound appearance for two of the three bands.

Ruth Eckerd Hall, which manages the venue, called it a debut for Blues Traveler and Gin Blossoms. Spin Doctors round out the bill as special guests. The show starts at 6 p.m.

Guitarist Chan Kinchla, who co-founded Blues Traveler with singer John Popper, bassist Bobby Sheehan and drummer Brendan Hill, told St. Pete Catalyst the three bands have stayed active since their 1990s peak. Kinchla said the night carries some nostalgia, but all three acts have been working steadily for decades.

"These are all living, breathing bands that have been doing it for a long time," Kinchla said in the Aug. 30 interview. "And that makes for good live music."

The group started as a high school band in Princeton, N.J. Hits like "Run-Around" and "Hook" were in hourly rotation on MTV in the mid-1990s. Kinchla said the band's longevity comes from growing up together. He compared the dynamic to a family where members know they will work things out rather than overreact.

Blues Traveler has kept touring through real loss. Sheehan died of a drug overdose in 1999. Kinchla's younger brother Tad Kinchla took over on bass, and keyboard player Ben Wilson has been with the group for 26 years.

Popper was also a founding member of Spin Doctors before leaving to focus on Blues Traveler. Kinchla called the relationship familial, telling the Catalyst the bands came up together.

Blues Traveler records every live show and posts the recordings on Nugs.net, so Tuesday's Clearwater set should join the archive.
